The Lower School focuses on building skills that will ensure later academic success. In the lower grades, language arts include reading, handwriting, and spelling, then the emphasis shifts toward understanding and appreciating literature, the expression of ideas in writing, and the development of vocabulary. Literature includes classics from Winnie-the-Pooh to Greek mythology. In mathematics, children work on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, and practice their computational skills by working with the Everyday Math program, developed by the University of Chicago. Science in the lower school includes the study of physical, life, and earth sciences. French and Spanish are studied throughout the elementary years, as are music and art. The study of history and geography is begun in Grade 2 and continues throughout the lower school curriculum. Topics covered include ancient Near Eastern and European history, an exploration of medieval and Renaissance times, and an introduction to the modern era.
