The position of Music Instructor to students in Grades VII - XII (ca. $10,000/annum):
Must be willing to teach music from a choral perspective, including sight-singing/musical intervals, music reading, theory and composition, and correct vocal production and support, whatever the students' initial abilities and skills.
Music classes are four times a week, 42 minutes each, two periods with Grades VII-IX (ca. 20 students) and two periods with Grades X-XII (ca. 20 students), extending for two full semesters of two 9-week quarters each, one quarter of which will be devoted to teaching melodies and harmonies and vocal production for Operetta.
Tryouts for operetta are held at the end of Quarter I (mid-October) and Quarter II there would also be a five-period-a-week meeting with the chorus and leads of the operetta for vocal work, blocking and performance, the final performance being the first week in January, 2011.
This year we will be performing The Sorcerer, Gilbert and Sullivan's third collaboration and one of their more popular pieces. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sorcerer for some background information and a listing of voice ranges, bearing in mind that we have successfuly performed Operetta with children as young as 6th and 7th graders, placing the ranges appropriately for immature male voices.
Instructor would be provided with support at the piano for both music class and for Operetta performance. If desired, instructor may teach a two-period-a-week elective competitive choir class in the Spring Semester, in addition to the continuing Music class.
